The Cosmic Ashtray: A Hidden Spectacle In Escalante
Southern Utah is a marvel that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get over. Despite however many times I find myself venturing into the vast desert to our South, I’m constantly pulled back. This past spring break, I headed down yet again to spend some time in the sun and get away from the gloomy bipolar weather that is the Salt Lake Valley. Though I planned to keep it lowkey, there was one hike I had to do while I was down there.
Tucked just off Scenic Byway #12 outside the town of Escalante, an absolute gem lies waiting for you to explore. Carved by wind and water over the course of a couple million years, a weathering pit known as The Cosmic Ashtray is a spectacle to behold. This massive, sand filled crater is a hike to add to your bucket list.
Getting to the trailhead
Did I say hidden? Though not inaccessible, the trailhead is tucked pretty far away from the main road. Just past the Heads of Rock Overlook, you’ll find a small, somewhat inconspicuous dirt road. I would highly recommend having a 4WD vehicle, but the road by no means anything to write home about.
The Hike
With just under 8 miles out and back with around 800 ft of elevation gain, I found this trail to be surprisingly challenging. For the first mile and a half or so, the trail winds through a wash with deep sand that makes each step more difficult than one might expect. After emerging from the wash, the trail all but disappears. You’ll find a sea of rock and boulders that prevent a trail from forming, so other than the guidance of a few cairns, make sure you have a map downloaded and are able to properly orient yourself. Despite the challenge of no trail, the hard ground makes this section much easier. As you hike, you’ll be treated to a panoramic view of most of Escalante.
The Ashtray
After a brief ascent up the rock face, The Cosmic Ashtray sits hidden at the very top of the mountain. Filled with some of the finest sand I’d ever felt, you can climb down some handholds into the hole and take in the alien landscape. My group decided to have lunch inside and really appreciate this marvel in the desert.
Leave no Trace
I’m sure I’ll sound like a broken record to most, but I can’t emphasize it enough. Pick up your trash! This area seems almost untouched by humans, so take care to make sure that experience is there for those who may explore later.
