The Low Snow Backcountry Skiing of Idaho: A Photo Series

May 12, 2021

Fueled by leftovers and hopes of good snow, my friend Ryan Dobi — sometimes his brother, Andrew Dobi — and I would drive for hours to some obscure mountain pass. I thought the extra burden of seven pounds of camera equipment wouldn’t slow me down. It did. Then, with unpredictable snow conditions, we were confined to mellower zones. We still had fun.

This photo series features all of the early season backcountry skiing I did in Idaho. It was an adventure filled with cold temperatures, long drives, hot springs, some good snow and a lot of slow touring. While Idaho is not a famous backcountry skiing destination, I still love the pillowy lines that I first followed years ago. Enjoy!
